Community Hall

82 Milligan’s Wharf Road, Freeland

Our community hall is located at the intersection of Route 12 and Milligan’s Wharf Road (Route 173) in Freeland. Built circa 1958, it was originally an elementary school. In 1973, after consolidation of regional schools, the Freeland Women’s Institute acquired the building and created a community meeting place. In 2011, the Women’s Institute generously donated the building to the Rural Municipality of Lot 11 and Area for use as an emergency operations centre and temporary warm-up shelter.

In 2012, our Municipal Emergency Measures Organization equipped the building with an emergency power generator. This was the first step in an ongoing effort to prepare the facility for use as an emergency operations centre and temporary shelter during a state of emergency. This project was made possible by the support of the PEI Office of Public Safety and Public Safety Canada’s Joint Emergency Preparedness Program.

Our municipality will continue to operate the facility as a community meeting centre. Community organizations and residents are encouraged to rent the hall for events.
